Silviana Zub

“I use forceful gestures and sometimes strong colors, often intertwined with “feminine”, curvilinear and more sensual elements in my paintings. I aim for fluidity and an organic feel, as if the painting came into existence on its own. At times I like to create new meanings and suggest feelings and emotions by merging elements of the human body with plants or unexpected objects. Most of my work is born from a combination between dream and reality, between imagination and observation, between spiritual and physical; in other words, I create a dreamworld refined on a conscious level. My personal history and culture are the foundation of my art, and I draw my inspiration from the simple shapes and colors in nature. My goal is not a photographic representation of reality, it is capturing its essence, its core, its spirit, it is my emotional response to it.
In a way I am painting my soul and emotions” — Silviana Zub

Growing up in the culturally rich Romanian town of Piatra-Neamț until the age of 20, Silviana was exposed to the classic styles of the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine empires early in her life. Her father was a well known art and antiques collector, and she quickly became interested in art from childhood, spending most of her time drawing, designing fabric prints and clothing.

Over the following years she would also combine her artistic audacity with art lessons, which created the spark that set in motion a refreshing and unique talent of capturing reality on canvas.
Completing her education at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, Silviana took the challenge of experiencing being a project manager, a children’s clothing designer, a scenic painter or a movie set designer. But she continued to invest a considerable amount of time and special attention to painting, and after a while she dedicated herself exclusively to it in her studio in
Los Angeles. The time spent at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was essential in shaping her mature artistic vision, which translated into more surrealist-inspired, more unexpected and provocative works.

Focusing on composition, blending eccentric perspectives and experimenting with colors was the recipe to creating astonishing and unforgettable dreamscapes. Other more abstract works are inspired by nature, her travel, various childhood folk-tales from her homeland, and they employ a personal technique that Silviana has developed:

“I find myself more through my abstract pieces… I try to simplify, to purify the physical and minimize the shapes so that the essence, the energy transmitted is as untainted as possible” — Silviana Zub

Without a doubt Silviana is more of a narrative painter: “daring when it comes to the dream, speechless when it comes to expressing herself, using vivid colors and bold brush strokes rather than words to tell universal human stories through her art” – Vasile Spataru, visual artist – Biarritz, France

Silviana’s work has been displayed in numerous individual and group exhibitions in galleries throughout the United States and Europe, and can also be found in various private,
public institutions and art museum collections.
